A trained Bharatanatya and Kathak dancer, Lasya Nagraj, dreams of starting a dance school abroad. Daughter of dancer Sudha Nagraj, Lasya runs the Aradhana Institute of Bharatanatya with her mother in Bengaluru. It was classical dance that put her on the road to films and things “happened quickly. I started off by being a part of a reality dance show,” says Lasya, who was offered a pivotal role in the mega serial Padmavathi on Colors Kannada. Within three months of Padmavathi, she bagged her first film, Asathoma Sadgamaya where she plays the lead alongside Radhika Chetan (of Rangitaranga, U-Turn and Coffee Thota fame) and Kiran Raj (from the serial Kinnari).

As soon as the shooting for the film started, Lasya quit television as “the dates were clashing” and started focusing on films. Things were moving slowly for the petite actress till she was invited to participate in Big Boss, which made her a household name. The actor reveals that she had a “negative opinion about this reality show. I was never interested in even watching it. It was only after I had a wild card entry did I discover the challenges every inmate faces.” Lasya entered Big Boss on day 57 and stayed on till the end. Talking of her experience, she says, “I realised the show was not how I imagined it — people fighting all the time.
The inmates had to work on their emotional and intelligence quotients. Their endurance was put to test. You have no one to talk to and you are made to do tasks you are not comfortable with.
You do not get good food, and every step is a challenge. The worst part of the show is that people all over are watching you, so you just don’t give up,” explains Lasya, who gradually started enjoying being in the Big Boss house. The only thing she was worried about was the “negative reaction that inmates get. Thankfully, people loved me and Big Boss opened more doors for me.” Apart from Asathoma Sadgamaya, she is also looking forward to the release of Mangalvaara Raja Dina with Chandan Acharya and Home Minister with Upendra.
She beams as she says “three films and three roles”. She plays a chirpy girl living in a bubble, Home minister has her play a corporate head and she is a spoilt brat in Mangalvaara. So what about TV, will she be game for more serials? “I am not willing for long-term commitments for the small screen. But if something interesting comes up and is a short role, I will be game for it,” says Lasya who shuttles between Chennai and Bengaluru, as she is a mentor for the dance show Dance Jodi Dance on Zee-Tamil.
